Real Weddings: Katie Wanket & Eric Henry
Running to Love
Diablo Ranch, Walnut Creek
If it wasn’t for a nosy neighbor and meddling mothers, Katie Wanket and Eric Henry—both from Pleasant Hill—might have never met. Or married.
Knowing that both Katie and Eric were runners, and knowing both of their mothers, the neighbor decided the youngsters should meet. She arranged for Katie to pop into the running store where Eric worked for a quick introduction, hoping the rest would be history.
But it wasn’t that easy: Katie was leaving on a month-long backpacking trip through Ireland, and neither she nor Eric made plans to connect when she returned. But those moms got to meddling, and Eric’s convinced him to give Katie a call before she left, wishing her a good trip.
When Katie returned, she was bombarded with demands from her own mom to call Eric back. After a few days of phone tag, the two decided to meet up for, you guessed it, a run. “Our first ‘date,’ although neither of us thought of it that way, was a run around Lafayette Reservoir. We didn’t stop talking the entire time,” says Katie.
Six years later, Eric got down on one knee while the couple was on their favorite run—the Lafayette Rim Trail at the reservoir. “Since it was where we had our first run together, I knew it would be the perfect place to ask her to marry me,” says Eric.
Katie and Eric picked another favorite place for their rustic wedding: Diablo Ranch on Mt. Diablo. The ceremony was filled with personal touches, from the flowers (bells of Ireland for Katie’s Irish heritage) to the groom’s accessories (Eric carried his grandfather’s wedding ring in his suit pocket).
“We wanted to create a day reflective of the both of us,” says Katie. “We even strayed from the traditional processional to incorporate a Dave Matthews Band song (“#34”) because Eric is a huge fan.”
After celebrating their nuptials—and fulfilling their number one goal: family and friends dancing all night—the couple planned an Italian honeymoon.
They now live in Walnut Creek and welcomed their first child this November.
